How to create a hygge home this autumn
With the nights drawing in and the weather starting to change, our thoughts have turned to comforting fireplaces, warming drinks and creating a cosy hygge home.
With no direct translation into English, hygge (pronounced Hoo-ga) instead represents a culture of cosiness, simplicity and joy. Often known as the Norwegian term for wellbeing, hygge is a Danish concept and lifestyle which embraces intimacy, mindfulness and taking pleasure from the ordinary, inexpensive things in life. It has also often been cited as one of the reasons why Denmark is regularly voted as one of the happiest countries in the world.
Focused on spreading warmth and calm, hygge celebrates health and happiness and is about creating a space for family and friends to gather together. With the holiday season right around the corner, now is the perfect time to hygge your home and immerse yourself in this cosy and carefree lifestyle. Take a look at our list of easy ways to embrace hygge this season.
Stoke up the fire
It doesn’t get much cosier than huddling round a flickering fire. So, to create the ultimate hygge sanctuary make the hearth the focal point of your room. If you don’t have a fireplace in your home, you can still create the comforting effect by arranging clusters of candles of different shapes and sizes into a focal point. Warming aromas of scented candles are also a great and simple way to create a cosy ambience.
Take inspiration from nature
A few subtle touches of nature are also a simple way of setting the seasonal mood. A centrepiece of pinecones and autumnal flowers, and foliage wreaths hung in your windows are a sure way to make any room feel more inviting.
Reach for something soft
Comfort is key for the perfect relaxing atmosphere, and textured accessories are a fantastic way to easily achieve this. Think cosy blankets, faux fur throws, fluffy pillows and chunky knit cushions; lusciously soft textures are a simple way to add dimension to any room.
Time for tea?
